Live-In Cook & Housekeeper – Boatbuilding Project (S/V Canvasback)
Private mission-supported project | Age 17
At age 17, I served as the live-in cook and housekeeper for the crew constructing the sailing catamaran Canvasback. The role required managing daily meals and household operations for a fluctuating crew, often without advance notice of how many people would be present.
This was my first experience independently running a kitchen and supporting a large, ongoing project with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities & Skills:
Planned and prepared daily meals for 2–20 crew members
Managed a kitchen independently in a remote, project-based environment
Learned and executed core recipes from memory
Developed practical skills using fresh herbs and scratch cooking
Maintained cleanliness of shared living spaces
Provided housekeeping support for a live-in crew
Assisted with production and mailing of a monthly printed newsletter
Adapted quickly to changing needs and schedules
The vessel later launched and continues to serve in medical and dental missions in the Marshall Islands. Although I did not sail with the crew, the experience was formative, building confidence, resilience, and lasting friendships during my first extended time away from home.
